About Us
Our History
Today,
Our Lady of Good Counsel is a diverse community with approximately 140
families. It has grown since it celebrated its first Mass on August 12, 1912
with Father Vesta from St. Leo's in Tacoma. It was not until 1918 that a
Church was built. This new Church was built on Washington Street and the
first mass celebrated in our own worship space was on December 18, 1818.
From 1918
until 1957, Our Lady of Good Counsel was a mission of St. John of the Woods
parish in Midland and two Masses a month were celebrated. In 1957 we became
a mission of Our Lady Queen of Heaven parish in Spanaway. It was at this
time that the members were able to have Mass every Sunday. During this time
the pastor purchased the property for the new Church which we now worship
in. In 1969 we once again became a mission of St. John of the Woods. In 1995
we became a mission under a new parish that was to be built on South Hill,
Holy Disciples.
On the
last Sunday of November, 1979, after Mass, the members of Our Lady of Good
Counsel said goodbye to their faithful Church and moved over to their new
Church. The first Mass in this worship space was on December 2, 1979.
Many
pastors have come and gone. Each one of them leaving behind a community that
was founded on faith and the desire to worship together as a community.
